Winter Reads

If there was ever a time of year to cuddle up and get cozy with a good book, this is it!

I’ve been reading a ton of great books lately and have a “to read” list that’s a mile and a half long. There are just so many to choose from.

Also, I could spend the rest of my life in Chapters and be one happy camper. But that’s a different story.

I thought I’d share some of the books I can’t wait to crack open, and some of my favourite reads from the past little while. They would make great gifts (but no one is judging if you just pick them up for yourself…)

Let’s start with the ones I have read, and move on to my queue. Happy reading!

1. The Cartel by Don Winslow
Art Keller is a DEA agent hell bent on capturing narco Adan Barrera. What follows in this hefty novel is beyond thrilling…I couldn’t put this book down. Recommended by Lauryn Evarts, this is probably the best book I’ve read in years. It’s an incredible look at the cartel  and the relationship between America, Mexico, and the narcos.

2. The Husband’s Secret by Lianne Moriarty
GUYS. Lianne Moriarty’s books are the most riveting novels I’ve read in a while. The Husband’s Secret is the most recent one I read, but I highly recommend any of her books. They are mysterious, thrilling and keep you hooked until the last page. I can’t even talk about the plot without trying to tell you the whole synopsis…so just go read it. Please.

3. The Martian by Andy Weir
We all know what this one is about…and now we can put Matt Damon’s face to the character’s name. Swooooooon. If you saw the movie, never fear…the book holds a few surprises that didn’t make it to the big screen.

4. Natchez Burning by Greg Iles
History nerds of the world unite! This book is the first in a trilogy (the third is yet to be released…helllppp) and tells the story of a small American town and the historic hate crime secrets it holds.

5. Ragtime by EL Doctorow
To be honest, I only picked up this book because the director of my production of Ragtime told me to. But I am so glad I did. The story is so beautiful and it is still too relevant today. Ragtime shows how the worlds of three groups- the white upper class, the African-American inhabitants of Harlem, and the Jewish immigrants- are intertwined at the turn of the century.

And now, onto my to-read list for the season. Let me know if there are any books that you’d recommend!
