What I’m Reading

Since I’ve been out of school, my love of reading has returned. Funny how that happens…

Whether it be on the subway, before bed, or on my lunch break, I love having a book at the ready. It makes time-killing so much easier, and is such a nice departure from staring at a screen. I hardly want to go on my computer when I get home anymore…after looking at a computer all day at work, at my laptop for my blog, and at my phone in between, my eyes need some serious R&R.

Here are the books that are waiting patiently on my nightstand. Let me know if you have any book recommendations! Lord knows I will blow through these babies in 2 seconds. (Did anyone else’s mom yell at them for reading books too fast when they were a kid? She would buy me a book and I’d finish it in an hour…sorry mom, some things don’t change).

Luckiest Girl Alive – Jessica Knoll
My mama got me this book for my birthday and described it as “Gone Girl-y”. I’m only a few chapters in, but I am HOOKED. It tells the story of a girl with a dark and secret past…this seems to be a theme in my favourite books, so I hope that doesn’t say something about me. If you loved Gone Girl or The Girl On The Train, or even Gossip Girl (you’ll get it if you read it), then this is definitely for you.

All the Light We Cannot See – Anthony Doerr
To be honest, I was looking for new books and saw this in my friend Nicole’s perfectly laid out lazy morning Instagram. Thanks NVC. Anyways, after purchasing it I realized it had been on the best seller list for over a year…thanks x2, NVC! It follows a blind French girl and a German boy during WWII…I’m a big fan of historical fiction, and I hear this is a book that begs you to pay close attention. It may not be my pre-bed light read, but I’ll definitely be diving into it soon.

Ragtime – E.L. Doctorow
If you’ve spoken to me at all in the past few weeks, you’ll know that I’m doing a community theatre production of Ragtime (YAY!!!) In preparation for the show, I’m supposed to read the book. Luckily, I keep hearing what an incredible novel it is…I love the story, so I’m excited to read it. Ragtime is so interesting in the sense that it combines fictional characters, real historical figures, and looks at issues of race, tolerance, love, violence, and so much more at the beginning of the 20th century. Also, if you’re in Toronto in October, come see EMP’s production…just sayin’.
